Gómez gunning for first goal in the Champions League
Maxi Gómez has already opened his goal account for the season in LaLiga, and next on his 'To Do' list is scoring for the first time in the Champions League. The Uruguayan will get an opportunity to do so on Wednesday, when Valencia CF meet Ajax at Mestalla.
The striker, who grabbed a brace against Getafe a week ago, is a big fan of the European competition, and is keen to make his mark.
"I used to play in the Champions League on Playstation games, so being able to play in the real competition is a beautiful thing," he told VCF Media on Monday. "I always try to score goals in every game, whether it be in LaLiga, in the Champions League or just in training. I hope that on Wednesday I can score my first Champions League goal."
Not that he feels the game will be a pushover. Gómez warned of the threat posed by Ajax to Valencia CF earning a perfect record from their opening two European games.
"The win the other day was fundamental. I think that we deserved a win like that to get more confidence for Wednesday. The match against Ajax is going to be very tough.
"Every Champions League match is very difficult. I think that every opposing side is very tough -it's why they are in the Champions League. It's going to be hard, but we are going to face it just like we did at the weekend, when we took the three points. Hopefully we can get the win here; it would be a very important result."
"We always want to win," continued Gómez, emphasising the importance of the home crowd on Matchday 2.
"The fans are going to give us a huge boost on Wednesday. We're very grateful to them, because they've treated me very well since the moment I got here. Their support is very important for Wednesday, and I hope we can take the victory."
